Title and Ownership Requirements in Texas

TxDMV tells sellers to provide a properly signed title. If your Texas title is lost or destroyed, the recorded owners can request a Certified Copy of Title. All recorded owners must sign the application. If a lien is recorded, the lienholder must apply for the certified copy or provide an original release of lien. TxDMV advises sellers to provide a properly signed title and Form 130-U, keep transaction records, and submit a Vehicle Transfer Notification. Texas also has a narrow no-title process for vehicles acquired by licensed Used Auto Parts Recyclers for dismantling or scrap. Effective January 1, 2026, the vehicle must be at least 13 years old and must not have been registered for at least seven years. Special lien requirements also apply. Do not assume this route applies to your vehicle; the vehicle and acquiring business must qualify under the TxDMV UAPR requirements.

TxDMV distinguishes salvage from nonrepairable vehicles. A salvage vehicle may be repaired or rebuilt and, after meeting the applicable requirements, titled as a rebuilt vehicle.
