How to Request a Junk Car Offer in Maryland

Have the year, make, model, mileage, running status, major damage, title or lien status, and pickup location ready. Disclose missing components and access issues. If an important detail changes, tell ByeCar before accepting the offer or arranging pickup.

  1. Start your request. Enter the brand, model, year, ZIP code, and contact information in the existing form. Prepare condition details for review.
  2. Review the evaluation. Additional photos, ownership information, or an inspection may be needed before an amount can be confirmed. A request does not guarantee an offer.
  3. Confirm documents and pickup. Establish who can sign, whether a lien remains, whether the car rolls and steers, and whether access or equipment could affect collection.
  4. Decide on the terms. Confirm the final amount, payment method and timing, potential charges, and handover steps before agreeing to sell.

What Affects a Junk Car Offer in Maryland?

An offer depends on the individual vehicle, not a fixed statewide scrap price. The year, make, model, mileage, mechanical condition, body damage, usable parts, and missing components can all influence an evaluation.

The title or salvage-document status and vehicle location also matter. A complete car with an engine failure may be assessed differently from one missing its wheels or drivetrain. A vehicle at an accessible driveway may have different collection requirements from one in a storage yard with release fees.

Ask whether inspection, transport, storage, or special loading could change the final amount.

What Types of Junk Cars Can You Submit?

You can request a quote for a junk vehicle that does not run or has significant mechanical or body damage. Describe the vehicle as it currently sits rather than assuming a condition is automatically accepted.

Examples include a failed engine or transmission, collision or frame damage, water or fire exposure, severe rust, and missing keys or major components. Explain whether the vehicle rolls and steers and note any fluid leaks or unsafe loading conditions.

If major components are missing or the vehicle has an unusual condition, disclose that before pickup. For deeper condition-specific information, see ByeCar's damaged-car service page or Maryland broken-car service.

Maryland Title and Ownership Requirements

For an ordinary sale of a Maryland-titled vehicle, the Maryland MVA selling guidance says the seller should have a valid title in the seller's name and resolve any open lien. Complete the required assignment with buyer details, sale date, price, applicable odometer disclosure, and signatures. When multiple owners are named, MVA generally requires their signatures unless the title specifies "OR."

Which ownership document do you have?

SituationWhat to confirm before the sale
Valid Maryland titleCheck VIN, owner names, lien status, and the assignment fields.
Lost or damaged titleCheck MVA's duplicate-title process. Eligible owners can request a duplicate online or at an MVA kiosk; Form VR-018 is available for applications submitted by mail or at an MVA office. Verify the identification, signatures, and any lien-release documents required for your case.
Recorded lienObtain the required release or work with the lienholder before transfer.
Salvage or rebuilt documentationIdentify the exact certificate or branded title and confirm permitted transfer steps.
Title unavailable for a recycler transactionCheck whether a restricted statutory procedure applies and whether the receiving business qualifies.

When a Title Is Unavailable for a Recycler Transaction

Under Maryland Transportation §25-209, a vehicle owner, a property owner with an abandoned vehicle, or a person with lawful, documented possession and a defective, lost, or destroyed title may apply to the law-enforcement agency where the vehicle is located. The application must identify the vehicle and explain the circumstances under penalty of perjury. The agency reviews ownership or abandonment and follows applicable owner and secured-party notification procedures when required. After the statutory conditions are met, a certificate of authority can permit transfer to an automotive dismantler and recycler or scrap processor for the authorized purpose. It is not a substitute for a title in an ordinary vehicle sale.

COMAR 11.12.03.07 lists the evidence an automotive dismantler and recycler or scrap processor may use, including a title, salvage certificate, certain ownership or lawful-possession affidavits with required supporting documentation, and a law-enforcement certificate of authority (CS-78). Each route has its own conditions. None provides blanket permission for an ordinary title-free sale or establishes that ByeCar or a proposed acquiring business is qualified to use that route.

Maryland Salvage and Rebuilt Vehicle Documents

Physical damage does not automatically mean a salvage classification. Identify your actual title, salvage certificate, or rebuilt document.

The Maryland MVA salvage guidance explains that a salvage certificate does not authorize normal road registration or driving. A repairable salvage vehicle intended to return to road use must meet applicable rebuilding, Maryland State Police salvage-inspection, title, and registration requirements. Parts-only or non-rebuildable documents are different and should not be presented as eligible for ordinary rebuilt registration. For a dismantling or scrap transaction, confirm that the actual document permits the proposed transfer and that the receiving business qualifies.

Maryland License Plates and Insurance After Selling

Complete the seller portions of the transfer and keep proof of the transaction, including copies of the signed title and buyer information. Remove the Maryland plates before the vehicle changes hands. If you are not transferring them to another vehicle as permitted, return them to the MVA.

The MVA plate-return instructions explain how to return plates at an MVA counter, through a drop box, or by mail. Include Tag Return Form VR-027 with a drop-box or mailed return, and retain the official return receipt. Keep the required insurance active until the MVA confirms the plate return or cancellation and you have received the receipt. Do not cancel coverage merely because the car has been collected.

Preparing for Junk Car Pickup in Maryland

Provide the vehicle's actual location and disclose anything that could affect access, such as a locked garage, gate, storage facility, blocked driveway, missing keys or wheels, or a third party who must authorize release. Confirm pickup timing and any applicable limitations or charges before completing the sale.

State whether the car starts, rolls, and steers, and who must release it. Do not drive an unsafe vehicle to a collection point. Pickup availability depends on the address and condition, not simply a published service area.

Maryland Service Areas and City Pages

Enter the vehicle's actual ZIP code and location when requesting a quote. ByeCar has dedicated Maryland city pages for Baltimore and Columbia. Outside Maryland, use ByeCar's cash-for-junk-car service areas.

Maryland Junk Car Selling FAQs

Do I need a Maryland title, and what if mine is missing?

For an ordinary Maryland-titled vehicle sale, use a properly assigned title. If it is lost or damaged, check MVA's duplicate-title process. Eligible owners can apply online or at an MVA kiosk, while Form VR-018 supports paper applications. Check any lien-release requirements before transfer.

Can a licensed recycler accept alternative ownership documents?

In specified circumstances, yes. Maryland §25-209 and COMAR 11.12.03.07 provide restricted procedures for qualified recipients. They do not guarantee ByeCar can accept a titleless vehicle.

What if my Maryland vehicle has an outstanding lien?

Contact the lienholder and confirm the release or other documentation required. Do not assume an offer request resolves the lien or transfers ownership.

Can I request an offer for a salvage or non-running vehicle?

Yes. Describe the vehicle's condition and exact title or certificate status. Evaluation does not guarantee purchase or authorize an otherwise restricted transfer.

What happens to Maryland plates and insurance after the sale?

Remove the plates and return them to MVA if not transferring them as permitted. Keep coverage active until the required plate-return confirmation is received. Retain the receipt and sale records.

How are payment and vehicle pickup arrangements confirmed?

ByeCar's published disclosure says payment is typically made by check or wire. Confirm the method, timing, collection availability, equipment needs, and any charges for your transaction. Do not assume immediate cash or free towing.
