What Types of Cars Can Be Evaluated?

You can submit a car with engine or transmission failure, accident damage, flooding, fire damage, serious rust, high mileage, or missing parts. Explain if it cannot roll or steer, or if keys are missing. Eligibility depends on the actual condition, documents, and collection requirements. How Does the Offer and Sale Process Work?

1. Describe the vehicle. Submit its basic details and disclose known damage, missing parts, ownership issues, and pickup restrictions.
2. Review an offer, if available. Confirm the proposed amount, its conditions, and what could change it after a closer inspection.
3. Agree on collection and payment. Check the pickup address, any removal charges, required documentation, payment method, and timing before accepting.
4. Complete the transfer. Review the paperwork and agreed payment arrangements, remove your New York plates, and release the vehicle only when the transaction requirements are satisfied.

New York Title and Ownership Documents

New York's rules depend partly on the vehicle's model year and the documents you have. Confirm who legally owns the car before arranging a transfer.

Vehicles from model year 1973 or newer

For an ordinary sale, most model-year 1973 or newer cars require the original New York title or other proof of ownership accepted by the DMV, including qualifying out-of-state documentation. The seller named on the ownership document must complete the applicable transfer section and provide a signed bill of sale. Complete odometer disclosures where required, and the damage disclosure on the New York title where applicable. Do not alter the title or leave required transfer information incomplete. Vehicles from model year 1972 or older

For qualifying model-year 1972 or older vehicles, an original or certified New York transferable registration can serve as ownership proof when accompanied by a bill of sale. The registration must be marked "transferable," and the person named on it must sign its transfer section. Acceptable evidence of ownership from another state may also apply. An ordinary registration that is not marked transferable is not automatically sufficient.

Lost title or a lien

If a required title was lost, stolen, or damaged, consult the DMV's replacement-title instructions. If a recorded lien has been fully satisfied, the DMV's specific lien guidance says the original title and original lien release may be given to the buyer without first obtaining a lien-free title. Confirm that the receiving buyer accepts the documents. If a loan is still active, work with the lienholder before attempting a transfer; sale for scrap does not extinguish the lien.

The restricted MV-35 no-title procedure

New York's MV-35 form is a restricted disposal procedure, not a general waiver of title requirements. The person using it must be the vehicle owner who either bought the vehicle from the titled owner but never titled it in their own name, or had a title issued in their name that was lost or stolen. The vehicle must be at least eight model years old and certified as worth $1,250 or less. It can be transferred only to a registered vehicle dismantler, itinerant vehicle collector, or certified scrap processor, subject to the required certifications and identification records. The receiving business also certifies that it paid $1,250 or less and that there are no undisclosed liens.

The vehicle transferred under MV-35 must be dismantled or scrapped and cannot be titled again. The $1,250 limits are eligibility conditions, not a typical junk-car payout. The form does not establish that ByeCar or its pickup partner qualifies to receive a vehicle under this procedure. A tow driver acting only as a delivery agent is not automatically an eligible recipient. Confirm the receiving business and documents before scheduling collection.

Salvage or rebuilt vehicles

If you hold a New York Salvage Certificate (MV-907A) or a title branded REBUILT SALVAGE, identify the exact document when requesting an offer. These statuses have separate requirements and do not guarantee buyer acceptance. See the New York DMV salvage guidance.

License Plates, Insurance, and Your Responsibilities

For a conventional transfer, complete the required title or other acceptable ownership document and a bill of sale. MV-912 is New York's Vehicle Bill of Sale, not a notice of release of liability. Keep copies of the signed documents showing the buyer, sale date, vehicle, and agreed amount.

Before the vehicle is taken away, remove its New York license plates and windshield registration sticker. Surrender the plates to the DMV or arrange an eligible plate transfer. New York requires liability insurance while the vehicle remains registered. If you are not transferring your plates, surrender them before canceling coverage and retain the surrender receipt. Preparing a Junk Car for Collection

Give the actual pickup address and describe anything that might make the car difficult to reach or load:

• Whether the wheels roll and the steering works, or whether keys or wheels are missing.
• Gates, narrow driveways, parking structures, blocked access, or steep ground.
• A repair shop, storage yard, apartment lot, or another property where permission or unpaid fees may affect release.
• Any leaking fluids, fire damage, or other safety concern that a collector should know about.

Remove personal belongings, prepare the required ownership documents, and confirm that the person releasing the vehicle has authority to do so. Do not drive an unsafe car to simplify pickup.

Can I request an offer if my car does not start?

Can an older New York car be sold with a registration instead of a title?

A 1972-or-older vehicle may qualify for transfer using a New York registration marked "transferable" and appropriate sale documents. Confirm the actual document and receiving buyer's requirements.

Can MV-35 be used for any junk car without a title?

No. MV-35 is limited to specified owners, vehicles at least eight model years old and worth $1,250 or less, and transfers to qualifying registered recyclers or collectors. The receiving business must satisfy its own certifications, and the vehicle must be dismantled or scrapped. It does not prove that ByeCar can accept your vehicle without a title.

What if a lender is still listed on my title?

If the debt is satisfied, obtain the original lien release to accompany the title. If the loan is still active, ask the lender what must be resolved before a lawful sale.

Can I cancel New York insurance as soon as the car is picked up?

Do not cancel required coverage while the car remains registered. If you are not transferring the plates, surrender them to DMV before ending insurance and retain the surrender receipt.
