What Documents Do You Need to Sell a Junk Car in Rhode Island?
Rhode Island changed its vehicle-title rules on January 1, 2024. For a Rhode Island vehicle, the requirement depends partly on its model year and when it was first registered to the current seller. See the Rhode Island DMV title-law guidance.

The DMV’s seller FAQ explains title signatures and bills of sale. The bill of sale should identify the vehicle, including its year, make, model, VIN and color, the sale price, and the seller’s signature and address. Record the sale date and complete any required odometer disclosure. Do not sign an incomplete title assignment.
If You Lost the Title
The DMV issues duplicates only for active Rhode Island-titled vehicles. Applications are handled at its Cranston headquarters using the TR-2/TR-9 form. The DMV instructions explain ownership and lienholder requirements; the current fee table lists $53.50. The DMV warns that a replacement can take up to 90 days.
For an older Rhode Island vehicle never titled under the former rules, check whether the pre-2024 seller exception allows transfer using ownership proof. If an initial title is required for your situation, the DMV provides a separate previously non-titled vehicle procedure. Do not request a duplicate for a vehicle that was never titled.
If the Car Has a Lien or Salvage Documentation

What to Do After Selling Your Vehicle in Rhode Island
Keep a copy of the bill of sale and transfer documents, remove your belongings, and remove the license plates from the vehicle before collection. Either cancel the registration or follow the DMV rules if you are transferring it to another vehicle.
Active Rhode Island registrations require liability coverage. When you stop using the vehicle, cancel its registration unless making an authorized transfer. After online cancellation is confirmed, retain the confirmation email; the cancelled plates may then be destroyed or recycled.
