Colorado Title and Ownership Paperwork

Colorado's ordinary vehicle-sale requirements and its special procedures for salvage, nonrepairable, or recycling transactions are not identical. The documentation needed depends on the recorded owner, any lien, the title's status, and how the vehicle is being transferred.

Properly Signed Title and Bill of Sale

For a typical private sale, the listed owners must sign the title as required. If several owners are listed, check who must sign; a power of attorney may be required when someone signs for an owner. Jefferson County's Colorado selling checklist also calls for a completed bill of sale with a perjury clause and recommends retaining a copy. Do not sign blank or incorrect transfer documents.

If a lien remains on the vehicle's title, obtain the necessary release before attempting a transfer. Do not assume a buyer can resolve an outstanding loan for you.

Lost Titles and Other Ownership Problems

If a Colorado title issued in your name was lost or destroyed, consult the DMV's Duplicate Title/Lien Request, Form DR 2539A. The form identifies who can apply and addresses active liens. A registration or ordinary bill of sale is not automatically a substitute for a transferable title.

When standard proof of ownership is inadequate, Colorado has a separate surety-bond title procedure, Form DR 2922 for qualifying cases. Colorado also has specific transfer-for-recycling rules under C.R.S. section 42-4-2202. Those rules do not create a general right to sell any vehicle without a title, and they do not establish that ByeCar accepts no-title vehicles. Salvage, Rebuilt, Nonrepairable, and Junk Designations

Describe the actual document you have, rather than calling every old or non-running car legally "junk." Colorado distinguishes salvage, rebuilt-from-salvage, nonrepairable, and vehicles formally designated junk or parts-only. Branded transfers can require the DR 2710 Branded Title Disclosure Statement. A junk-designated vehicle is not eligible for an ordinary new Colorado title, and a nonrepairable vehicle is intended for parts or scrap, not road use.

License Plates, Odometer, and Post-Sale Reporting

Remove the Colorado license plates when selling the vehicle. License plates remain with the seller, not with the car. This instruction does not refer to the vehicle's VIN plate; do not remove or alter the VIN.

Colorado provides a Report Release of Liability service through myDMV. Jefferson County's plate guidance advises submitting it within five days after a sale. Retain a copy of your bill of sale and transfer documents. Federal odometer-disclosure rules generally cover model year 2011 and newer vehicles for their first 20 years, subject to exemptions.

Preparing for Pickup and Confirming Payment

Remove personal belongings and your license plates, and check for anything that would prevent a safe release. Give the buyer the actual location, access hours, gate information, and whether a tow operator would need special equipment. If the car is at a repair shop or storage lot, identify who can authorize its release and whether charges are outstanding.

Before agreeing to the transaction, get clear answers to these three questions:
