Request an Offer for a Junk Car in Sunnyvale

If a car in Sunnyvale no longer runs, has expensive damage, or is sitting unused, you can submit its details to ByeCar for evaluation. You do not need to repair it just to request an offer.

Start with the vehicle's year, make, model, condition, and location. If an offer is available, review the amount and any requirements for documents, payment, and collection before deciding whether to sell. Requesting an offer does not guarantee a purchase or pickup.

Which Vehicles Can Be Considered?

Older, high-mileage, accident-damaged, and non-running cars may be considered. The nature and extent of damage, missing parts, and ownership records all matter.

Mechanical Problems and Non-Running Cars

Explain whether the engine starts and whether the car can drive, roll, steer, and brake. A vehicle with a failed transmission may need different loading arrangements from one that runs but has cosmetic damage. You do not need to diagnose a problem you cannot identify; describe what happens when you try to start or move the car.

Collision Damage and Missing Parts

Disclose significant collision, flood, fire, or structural damage, as well as missing wheels, keys, engine parts, or a catalytic converter. These details can affect the evaluation and the equipment needed to move the car. For additional condition-specific guidance, see selling a damaged car.

Submitting details is not a promise that the vehicle will be accepted.

What Determines a Junk Car Offer in Sunnyvale?

A junk car does not have a fixed local price. An evaluation can consider its year, make, model, mileage, running condition, usable components, and damage. Missing major parts can affect its potential value. Title status and the work required to collect it may affect the feasibility and terms of a transaction.

A scrap-metal estimate is only one way of thinking about a vehicle's remaining value. It is not a guaranteed purchase price. Our car scrap value guide explains the distinction in more detail.

What Information Should You Have Ready?

Prepare the year, make, model, approximate mileage, and ZIP code where the vehicle is actually parked. If you know them, include the vehicle identification number (VIN), significant damage, missing parts, and whether it starts, rolls, steers, and brakes. Explain whether you have the title, a recorded lien, or a salvage or nonrepairable document.

Photos can help show visible damage. Also mention access restrictions, such as a low garage ceiling, gate, blocked parking space, or repair-shop release requirement. The existing quote form may ask for only some of this information; other details can be provided during follow-up.

How the Offer and Vehicle Handoff Work

  1. Provide vehicle details. Submit the form or contact ByeCar with the vehicle's location, condition, and ownership information.
  2. Review any proposed offer. Confirm the amount, conditions, and whether more details or an inspection are needed.
  3. Agree on collection and paperwork. If you decide to proceed, confirm access, any applicable removal charge, who will receive the vehicle, and which documents must be signed.
  4. Complete the transaction. Confirm how and when payment will be made and when funds will be available. Keep your copies of the transfer records and complete your California seller responsibilities.

Submitting the form is not acceptance of an offer or a transfer of ownership. For additional service information, see Our Process.

Vehicle Storage, Parking, and Pickup Access in Sunnyvale

Cars Parked on Public Streets

Sunnyvale updated its 72-hour public-street parking rule on June 16, 2026, with enforcement of the updated requirements beginning July 16. After 72 hours, a vehicle must be moved at least 1,000 feet and cannot return to the same parking space for at least 24 hours. Violations may lead to citation or towing at the owner's expense, without a required advance warning.

The rule applies to public-street parking. Requesting an offer does not suspend it. See the City of Sunnyvale's abandoned-vehicle guidance.

Inoperative Vehicles on Private Property

Sunnyvale Municipal Code Chapter 9.24 separately addresses abandoned, wrecked, dismantled, and inoperative vehicles on private property. It restricts leaving those vehicles for more than 72 consecutive hours, subject to exclusions, including certain vehicles lawfully enclosed within a building and qualifying business-related storage.

This is different from the public-street 1,000-foot relocation rule. Not every older or parked car automatically falls into the restricted categories. Check the Sunnyvale municipal code and any property rules for your particular situation rather than assuming that an unused vehicle can remain outdoors indefinitely.

Garages, Driveways, Repair Shops, and Business Lots

A car behind a residential gate or inside an apartment garage may have access or height limits. A vehicle at a repair shop or storage lot may require authorization and resolution of any outstanding charges before release. For a business property in northern Sunnyvale, including the Moffett Park area near State Route 237, confirm access hours and who can authorize entry.

Tell the buyer whether the vehicle can roll and steer, has usable tires, is blocked by other vehicles, or is in a space where loading equipment cannot reach it. Do not move an unsafe car onto a public street simply to make collection easier. The location and vehicle condition must be reviewed before any pickup arrangement is confirmed.

California Ownership Documents and Seller Responsibilities

Title, Replacement Forms, and Liens

For an ordinary sale, the California Certificate of Title is the usual ownership document, and the appropriate owner and lienholder signatures may be required. If your California paper title is missing, the DMV's Application for Replacement or Transfer of Title, REG 227, may be needed. A recorded lien, an out-of-state title, or a person other than the named owner arranging the sale can require additional steps.

A registration card, insurance card, or informal bill of sale alone should not be assumed to resolve every ownership problem. See the California DMV title-transfer instructions.

Smog Rules Depend on the Actual Transfer

For an ordinary sale, California generally requires the seller to provide a valid smog certification unless an exemption applies. DMV procedures exempt vehicles transferred specifically to be wrecked or dismantled from that requirement. A car is not automatically exempt simply because it has failed a smog test, will not start, or is called a junk car.

Confirm the intended transaction before relying on the exemption. See DMV smog rules and DMV junking procedures.

What Happens to the License Plates?

California says standard license plates generally remain with the vehicle in an ordinary transfer. Personalized or special-interest plates can have different retention and reassignment requirements. Formal junking procedures may require license plates to be surrendered. Confirm the appropriate handling for your actual transaction rather than removing every plate automatically. See California DMV license-plate guidance.

File the Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability

When you sell or transfer the vehicle and deliver possession to the new owner, California generally requires you to notify DMV within five calendar days. For the Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability (NRL), keep the buyer's name and address, sale date, license plate number, vehicle identification details, and odometer reading. Save the confirmation.

An NRL does not by itself transfer ownership or replace applicable junk-vehicle filings. Another person may submit it for you, but DMV says you remain responsible if required information is missing. Follow the California DMV NRL instructions.

Repair Your Car or Sell It As-Is?

Compare the estimated repair cost with the car's likely value after repairs and whether you plan to keep driving it. Minor repairs may make sense; several expensive problems, severe damage, or a vehicle you no longer need may make an as-is offer worth comparing.

An offer is one option, not proof that selling to a junk-car buyer will produce the highest return. You can decide after reviewing the numbers and any transaction terms.

Three Checks Before Releasing the Vehicle

Confirm Access

Provide the exact location and any garage, gate, parking, or loading restrictions. Get permission from the property operator when required.

Confirm Ownership Documents

Identify the buyer and confirm which title, lien-release, or other transfer records are needed. Retain copies of signed documents.

Confirm Payment and Handoff

Agree on the amount, payment method, timing, expected availability of funds, and any collection charge. Remove your belongings, parking permits, and garage remotes before releasing the car.

Nearby Service Areas and California Guidance

The actual vehicle location is important when evaluating collection arrangements. If it is outside Sunnyvale, review the San Jose or Santa Clara page as appropriate. For general questions, see the ByeCar FAQ.

Frequently Asked Questions About Selling a Junk Car in Sunnyvale

Can I request an offer for a car that does not start?

Yes. Submit its details for evaluation and explain whether it rolls, steers, and brakes. A vehicle that cannot be safely moved may require different equipment. An offer or pickup is not guaranteed.

Can I sell a junk car without the California title?

A lost California title may be addressed through DMV Form REG 227 when applicable. A recorded lien or unusual ownership record can require additional documentation. Do not assume a bill of sale or insurance card alone is enough. Review the DMV's title-transfer instructions.

Is a smog certificate needed for a junk car sale?

An ordinary vehicle sale generally requires a valid smog certification unless exempt. California has an exemption for vehicles transferred specifically for wrecking or dismantling. The car's poor condition alone does not establish that exemption.

Can a car be collected from a Sunnyvale street or apartment garage?

Collection depends on the vehicle's location, access, property permission, condition, and available equipment. Provide the exact parking details. Sunnyvale's street-parking rules still apply while the vehicle remains there; private-property restrictions are separate.

Is junk-car towing always free in Sunnyvale?

Do not assume so. Before accepting an offer, confirm whether collection is available for your vehicle and location and whether any charge or deduction applies. Restricted access or special loading may require additional discussion.

When and how will I receive payment?

ByeCar's currently published footer says payment is typically by check or wire transfer, rather than guaranteed physical cash. Confirm the method, timing, and when funds will be available for your particular transaction before handing over the car.

What should I do with the license plates and DMV release notice?

Standard California plates generally stay with the vehicle in an ordinary sale, while special plates and junking transactions can have different rules. For a qualifying sale and delivery of possession, submit the DMV's NRL within five calendar days and keep the confirmation. The NRL alone does not complete the transfer.
