What Documents Do You Need to Sell a Junk Car in New York?

New York DMV titles most model-year 1973 and newer vehicles. For 1972-or-older motor vehicles, a transferable New York registration can serve as proof of ownership. If a required title is lost, stolen, or damaged, DMV provides a duplicate-title process. See the New York DMV title guidance.

New York's MV-35 procedure is a narrow no-title pathway. The current form limits it to owner transfers of vehicles at least eight model years old and worth $1,250 or less to specified dismantlers, collectors, or scrap processors; the vehicle must then be dismantled or scrapped.
