Georgia vehicle disposal guide
A practical guide to selling or scrapping your unwanted vehicle

Junking a car in Georgia begins with verifying ownership, deciding whether the car will be sold or permanently scrapped, and following the appropriate transfer procedure.

A lost title, outstanding lien, or salvage status can change what paperwork you need. This guide explains the process so you can make an informed decision before handing over your vehicle.

01 / OWNERSHIP Check your title

Verify ownership, title status, and any recorded lien.

02 / DISPOSAL Choose the right process

An ordinary sale and permanent scrapping are different transactions.

Address your Georgia registration before canceling insurance.

The process

How to Junk a Car in Georgia: 6 Steps

Whether your vehicle still runs or has been sitting unused for years, these steps cover the main decisions and responsibilities.

01

Verify ownership

Find the title or other applicable ownership records. Check for a lien and note whether the vehicle has a salvage or rebuilt title.

Georgia generally requires a title for 1986 and newer vehicles. Qualifying older vehicles may be exempt.

02

Choose a disposal option

Compare a junkyard, vehicle buyer, private sale, donation, or repair. Ask whether the car will be resold, repaired, or permanently dismantled.

03

Confirm the documents

Ask which paperwork the receiving party needs and who will complete any applicable title cancellation or salvage-dealer reporting.

See Georgia's seller instructions.

04

Prepare the vehicle

Remove belongings and disclose major damage, missing components, absent keys, or anything affecting collection.

Confirm transportation charges and payment terms before collection.

05

Complete the handoff

For an ordinary titled-vehicle sale, complete the title assignment correctly. Keep records of the transfer and any bill of sale.

Do not sign an incomplete or blank title.

06

Cancel registration

Georgia advises canceling registration before canceling the associated insurance policy to avoid potential penalties.

Review the DOR cancellation process.

Important distinction

When someone says they want to "junk" a car, they may mean selling an unwanted vehicle or permanently scrapping it. The correct legal procedure depends on what happens to the vehicle and who receives it.

Ownership & documents

What Paperwork Do You Need to Junk a Car in Georgia?

Have the relevant documents ready before arranging a vehicle sale or permanent disposal. The exact requirements depend on the vehicle's title status and transaction.

DocumentWhy It Matters
Certificate of TitleUsually required for ordinary transfers of title-required vehicles.
Completed title assignmentRecords the relevant buyer and transfer information.
Bill of saleCan help document the transaction and agreed terms.
Lien releaseMay be necessary when an existing recorded security interest has been satisfied.
Vehicle identification numberIdentifies the car in ownership and disposal records.
Salvage or scrap paperworkMay be required based on title classification and final disposition.
Registration cancellation confirmationHelps document that the previous owner canceled registration.
Georgia title rules by model year

Titles are generally required for 1986 and newer vehicles, optional for qualifying 1963–1985 vehicles, and not required for vehicles from 1962 or earlier. An exemption from title requirements does not eliminate the need to prove lawful ownership.

What if the car's title is lost?

If a vehicle requires a title and yours is lost or stolen, review the replacement process before completing a transaction that requires it. Eligible owners can apply through a Georgia County Tag Office.

Special situations

Can You Junk a Car Without a Title in Georgia?

A missing title does not automatically permit a no-title sale. Georgia has a limited process for qualifying scrap or derelict vehicles, but it is not a universal substitute for obtaining a title.

Georgia's limited MV-1SP scrap exception

Form MV-1SP, Cancellation of Certificate of Title for Scrap/Derelict Vehicles, includes specific certifications. For a qualifying motor vehicle, the owner must certify that:

  • The vehicle is 12 model years old or older.
  • The motor vehicle is worth less than $850.
  • No security interests or liens exist.
  • The owner has never obtained a title or has lost it.
  • The vehicle will be permanently dismantled or scrapped and never titled again.

The receiving licensed used-parts dealer, secondary-metal recycler, or scrap-metal processor must also complete its certification, including acquisition-value and lien-verification information.

The form instructs submission to the Georgia Department of Revenue within 72 hours, with copies provided and retained as directed. It is intended for a qualifying scrapping transaction, not an ordinary vehicle resale.

Do not assume that an older car qualifies.

The vehicle must meet the applicable conditions, and the receiving business must be able to use the proper process. An outstanding lien, disputed ownership, or missing documentation may require a different legal pathway.

Understand the difference

Selling a Junk Car vs. Permanently Scrapping It

The everyday term "junk car" does not necessarily describe the car's legal title status or final disposition.

Ordinary vehicle sale

The car changes ownership

A buyer may repair, resell, or otherwise use the vehicle where legally permitted. The seller follows the appropriate ownership-transfer rules.

The fact that a vehicle is damaged or non-running does not automatically mean that it has been permanently scrapped.

Permanent scrapping

The car leaves road use

A vehicle permanently dismantled, demolished, or scrapped under Georgia's applicable process cannot later be repaired and legally returned to road use.

Specific title-cancellation and recycler-reporting requirements can apply.

What happens to the title?

Qualifying salvage dealers and recyclers have specific title-cancellation and National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) reporting responsibilities.

Georgia also describes a less common owner-submitted process requiring the original Georgia title and a signed vehicle-description statement. Additional plate-related documentation can apply.

Confirm which party must submit the original title before handing it over. Do not submit the same document through conflicting procedures.

Vehicle condition

What Counts as a Junk or Salvage Car in Georgia?

"Junk car" is a broad description for a vehicle that may no longer be economical to repair or keep. Common examples include cars with failed engines, major transmission problems, collision damage, missing components, or long periods of disuse.

A car can be mechanically damaged and still have a clear title. A salvage vehicle, however, has a specific legal classification under Georgia law. Qualifying damage, an unrepaired insurance total-loss claim, or certain out-of-state damage brands can trigger salvage requirements.

Georgia does not allow salvage vehicles to operate on public roads in their salvage status. Eligible repaired vehicles may qualify for the separate rebuilt-title process. A vehicle already permanently scrapped is different and cannot return to road use through that process.

Compare your choices

Your Options for Getting Rid of a Junk Car in Georgia

There is no single best choice for every vehicle. Compare potential proceeds, required paperwork, transportation, and the amount of work involved.

Parts or scrap

Junkyard or Recycler

Suitable for vehicles mainly valued for reusable components or materials. Confirm the receiving facility's requirements, transportation charges, and disposal process.

Compare an offer

Junk Car Buying Service

Request an offer based on the vehicle's condition and details. Check payment terms, document requirements, any fees, and collection arrangements.

Repairable vehicle

Private Buyer

A repairable or project vehicle may interest an individual buyer. Expect to handle listings, negotiations, inspections, and the correct ownership transfer.

Noncommercial option

Vehicle Donation

An eligible charity may accept the vehicle. Verify the organization, its transfer requirements, and the tax documentation that may apply.

Should you repair it first?

Compare the likely selling value after repair with the cost, time, and risk of completing the work. A larger eventual sale price does not necessarily mean a better net result.

For vehicle donations, see the IRS charitable-contribution guidance.

Before collection

What to Do Before Pickup or Drop-Off

Preparing the car and clarifying the transaction terms can help prevent avoidable delays.

01
Gather ownership documents

Have the title or applicable records ready. Address any lien or ownership issue.

02
Describe the condition

Disclose engine failure, collision damage, missing parts, or absent keys.

03
Check access

Confirm whether the car rolls or steers and whether the location allows collection.

04
Remove your belongings

Check the trunk, glove box, seats, storage compartments, and personal devices.

05
Confirm the terms

Review the agreed amount, payment method, fees, transportation, and paperwork.

06
Keep transaction records

Retain your completed transfer documentation and any applicable receipts.

After the handoff

What to Do After Selling or Scrapping Your Car

Removing the vehicle does not automatically complete every responsibility of the former owner.

License plates

Keep the plate in an ordinary sale

Georgia's ordinary vehicle-sale procedure directs the seller to retain the license plate rather than transferring it to the buyer.

A particular owner-submitted permanent-scrapping procedure may have additional plate-related instructions, including Form T-158 where applicable.

Registration & insurance

Follow the correct cancellation order

Georgia advises canceling registration before canceling insurance to avoid potential penalties.

Registration cancellation is available through DRIVES e-Services or a County Tag Office.

Official resources: Georgia vehicle-sale instructions and registration-cancellation guidance.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Signing an incomplete or blank title
Assuming the buyer handles every state obligation
Canceling insurance before registration
Ignoring a recorded lien
Confusing a lost title with an abandoned vehicle
Accepting changed fees without review

A car abandoned by someone else does not automatically belong to the property owner. Georgia provides a separate abandoned-vehicle procedure.

Vehicle value

Can You Get Paid for a Junk Car in Georgia?

A non-running vehicle may still have potential value for resale, usable parts, or materials. An offer can depend on its year, make, model, condition, major components, location, ownership documents, transportation requirements, and market demand.

For example, a complete car with a failed engine may have different parts potential than the same model missing its engine, transmission, and wheels. A newer damaged vehicle may also have different parts demand from an older one.

Compare the amount you would actually receive.

No particular payout is guaranteed. Review any charges, transport arrangements, and remaining responsibilities when comparing buyers or recyclers.

Frequently asked questions

FAQs About Junking a Car in Georgia

Answers to common questions about title requirements, ownership, vehicle condition, and the steps after disposal.

Do I need a title to junk my car in Georgia?
A title is generally required for ordinary transfers of 1986 and newer vehicles. Different rules apply to certain older vehicles and qualifying scrap/derelict transactions. A lost title, title exemption, and MV-1SP affidavit are separate situations.
Can I junk a car if I still owe money on it?
An outstanding lien can prevent a lawful ownership transfer without additional action. Contact the lienholder, determine the payoff or release requirements, and disclose the situation before proceeding.
Do I have to remove my Georgia license plate?
For an ordinary sale, the previous owner retains the Georgia license plate. Certain permanent-scrapping procedures have additional instructions when a plate remains on the vehicle.
When should I cancel insurance?
Georgia advises canceling vehicle registration before canceling its insurance coverage to avoid potential penalties. Use DRIVES e-Services or contact your County Tag Office to address registration.
Can I junk a car with a salvage title?
A salvage-titled vehicle may be transferred or disposed of through an applicable legal process. Disclose its exact title brand and confirm the receiving party's document requirements. A salvage vehicle is not the same as one permanently scrapped.
What if the car doesn't start or is missing parts?
Recyclers and parts buyers may consider non-running or incomplete vehicles, but acceptance and offers vary. Disclose missing parts, mechanical problems, and any collection-access difficulties.
Can I scrap a car abandoned on my property?
Not simply because it was left there. Georgia has separate abandoned-vehicle procedures designed to protect owners and lienholders. Review the official Georgia guidance before taking action.
Official guidance: Georgia vehicle-title, scrapping, salvage, and registration requirements are administered by the Georgia Department of Revenue. Confirm unusual ownership or disposal circumstances with the relevant agency before proceeding.
