How Selling a Junk Car in Connecticut Works

Start with the vehicle details you know. Requesting an offer, agreeing to a price, arranging collection, and transferring ownership are separate steps.

  1. Request an offer. Enter the car's year, make, model, pickup ZIP code, and your contact information in the form on this page.
  2. Describe its condition. Be ready to explain whether it starts, runs, rolls, or steers; identify major damage, missing components, and title or lien problems.
  3. Review the terms. Confirm the proposed amount, whether inspection could change it, pickup availability and charges, and how and when payment would occur.
  4. Prepare for transfer. Gather the correct ownership documents, make arrangements for any stored vehicle, and follow Connecticut's requirements for the title, plates, and registration.

What Affects a Junk Car Offer in Connecticut?

A vehicle's year, make, model, condition, reusable parts, ownership documents, and pickup location can all affect an offer. There is no reliable single price for every junk car in Connecticut. Even two examples of the same model may have different values if one is complete and the other has severe damage or missing parts.

What matters What to tell the buyer
Mechanical condition Whether it starts, moves under its own power, rolls, and steers
Damage and missing parts Collision, water or fire damage, structural rust, missing wheels or major components
Ownership Available title or other permitted proof, listed owners, liens, and title brands
Collection details Pickup ZIP code, exact parking location, access restrictions, and storage charges

An advertised purchase price from another vehicle or state is not an estimate for yours. Ask whether the proposed amount includes collection and what could change it before agreeing to sell.

What Kinds of Junk Cars Can Be Evaluated?

You can request a review of a car that is no longer practical to drive, needs expensive repairs, or has significant damage. Evaluation does not guarantee purchase or pickup.

Non-Running Cars and Major Mechanical Failures

Describe engine or transmission problems, starting issues, and whether the car can roll and steer for loading. If you are deciding what to do with a mechanically defective vehicle, see selling a broken car in Connecticut.

Collision, Water, Fire, and Total-Loss Damage

Explain the known damage, whether an insurer declared a total loss, and any salvage brand shown on the title. A vehicle with significant damage is not necessarily eligible for every buyer or collection method. More background is available on selling a damaged car.

Rust, Missing Parts, and Vehicles That Cannot Be Moved Easily

Mention serious structural corrosion, missing wheels or keys, a removed catalytic converter, blocked steering, or other conditions that may affect handling. If the vehicle is inside a garage or at a repair facility, provide those details as well.

Connecticut Title and Ownership Documents

For an ordinary Connecticut vehicle sale, the seller completes and signs the title and gives the buyer a bill of sale. The Connecticut DMV selling instructions allow Form H-31 or a seller-prepared bill of sale. A seller-prepared document must include the buyer's and seller's names and addresses, the vehicle's year, make, model, color and VIN, the sale price and date, and the seller's signature. Keep copies of the completed documents.

If You Have the Original Title

Confirm that the vehicle identification number matches the car and the listed owners can sign. Assign the title as required, give the buyer the proper documents, and keep copies. If a lien is listed, obtain the required release before transferring ownership.

If the Connecticut Title Is Lost

The DMV's lost-title procedure allows a qualifying in-state transfer with Forms H-6B and Q-1 only when the original Connecticut title was lost, the vehicle is titled in the seller's name, and the buyer will register it in Connecticut. If those conditions are not met for a vehicle that requires a title, apply for a duplicate title. If a lien was listed on the original title, the DMV generally requires a lien-release letter on the lienholder's letterhead. For loans originated more than 10 years ago, its instructions describe an alternative declaration on Form H-6B. Follow the DMV requirements for your case. Do not assume ByeCar's purchaser qualifies for this in-state exception.

If the Vehicle Is More Than 20 Model Years Old

Connecticut generally does not require titles for vehicles more than 20 model years old. For registration of a non-titled vehicle, the DMV's proof-of-ownership guidance lists the last owner's registration, Form Q-1, and/or a bill of sale, depending on the transaction. This is an age-based exemption, not permission to transfer a newer vehicle without the required title. Confirm which documents the purchaser needs before arranging collection.

If the Vehicle Has a Salvage Brand

Connecticut restricts salvage-vehicle use and transfer. Vehicles branded "salvage parts only," "salvage unrebuildable," or "salvage unrepairable" cannot be registered or retitled. The DMV also says Form H-6B cannot replace a lost salvage title for transfer; a duplicate salvage title is needed. Disclose the exact brand and review the Connecticut salvage rules before planning a sale.

After the Sale: Plates, Registration, Insurance, and Property Tax

After selling the car, remove your plates and cancel its Connecticut registration. Save the cancellation receipt and your bill of sale. The DMV says to keep liability insurance in force until the registration is canceled. Separately, the vehicle may remain subject to municipal property-tax assessment while the registration is active. If you receive a later tax bill, ask your town assessor about a prorated assessment and provide the cancellation receipt and bill of sale. Cancellation does not itself guarantee a refund.

What to Confirm About Pickup and Payment

Before collection, give the actual parking location and explain anything that could make loading difficult, such as a gate, tight garage or missing wheels. Ask which pickup options are available for your ZIP code, whether any fees apply, and how and when payment will be made. The term "cash for junk cars" does not establish a particular payment method.

Three Checks Before You Agree to Sell

  • Vehicle access: Give the actual address, explain whether the vehicle rolls and steers, and disclose locked gates, missing wheels, or restricted loading space.
  • Ownership and release: Confirm that the required documents are ready and that a shop, tow yard, or storage facility can release the car. Ask about outstanding charges.
  • Offer and payment: Confirm the amount, any towing or other fees, the payment method and timing, and whether a condition discrepancy could change the offer.

Connecticut Cities and Service Availability

ByeCar has dedicated service pages for Bridgeport, Hartford, New Haven, Stamford, and Waterbury.

These links provide local information but do not establish pickup eligibility at every address. If your vehicle is elsewhere in Connecticut, provide its ZIP code so availability can be checked. For other states, use the national service-area directory.

Connecticut Junk Car Selling FAQs

Can I request an offer for a Connecticut car that does not run?

Yes, you can request an evaluation. Explain whether the car can roll or steer and whether any major parts are missing. Purchase and collection eligibility must still be confirmed.

Can I sell a junk car if I lost my Connecticut title?

Connecticut's H-6B/Q-1 process requires a lost Connecticut title in your name and a buyer who will register the vehicle in Connecticut. If the vehicle requires a title and those conditions are not met, apply for a duplicate title. If a lien is listed, follow the DMV's lien-release instructions, including its specific alternative for older loans. Do not assume ByeCar can use the exception.

What if my vehicle is more than 20 model years old?

Connecticut generally does not require titles for vehicles more than 20 model years old. The DMV identifies the last owner's registration, Form Q-1, and/or a bill of sale as documents used for non-titled vehicle registration, depending on the circumstances. Ask what ownership evidence your buyer requires.

Can a salvage-branded vehicle be considered?

You can ask for an evaluation, but disclose the brand. Connecticut has restrictions on salvage vehicles, and parts-only or unrebuildable brands cannot return to registration. Eligibility is not guaranteed.

When should I cancel registration and car insurance after selling?

Remove the plates, cancel the Connecticut registration, and retain its cancellation receipt and the bill of sale. The DMV says to maintain liability insurance until registration is canceled. If a property-tax bill arrives later, ask your town assessor about a prorated assessment using those records.

Is towing free, and when would I receive payment?

Before accepting an offer, confirm whether pickup is available for your vehicle and ZIP code, whether towing or access charges apply, and the payment method and timing. The final terms should be clear before the vehicle changes hands.

What if my car is at a repair shop or tow yard?

Provide the location and identify who can authorize release. Check access hours, keys, and any storage or impound charges. Confirm the collection arrangements before accepting an offer.
